New Oval Hull Russian Aircraft
21 January 2016

The round must in the angular, football is so easy. If but angular as a cargo container on a plane with a circular fuselagecross-sectionmust be stowed, is running out of space. Now the Russian Rosavia Consortium builds the first plane with elliptical cross section to accommodate more passengers and cargo.

Engineers of the Russian Rosavia Consortium with support from ThyssenKrupp on a large airliner with elliptical cross section are working meticulously for years. Now has the Consortium behind the Russian state airline Aeroflot, the aircraft manufacturer Tupolev and private investors standing, «Frigate Ecojet» decided the construction of the aircraft.

The prototype and the first serial machines will be built but not in Russia, but in a country of the EU. Rosavia has announced that the production site will be announced in February of this year. Then will start as far as possible in the short term with the production.

Oval fuselage allowed more favourable accommodation of passengers and cargo. New Oval Hull Russian Aircraft

The elliptical hull looks like a conventional airplane bodies flattened was weighed. With the new form, the Russian engineers want to substantially improve the ratio of usable space to the Interior of the aircraft. While provides a circular fuselagecross-sectionin terms of stability some advantages, but at the price that much interior space in the cargo hold and the passenger cabin is presented in very large aircraft. The Interior on the need can be cut at the oval or elliptical design.

Frigate Ecojet

The Russian frigate Ecojet is the first airliner with an oval body. This allows more passengers and cargo under used be. Possibly the aircraft even in Germany is being built.

The now completely developed frigate Ecojet is to absorb up to 352 in mehrklassiger version and up to 400 passengers in pure economy seating. The cargo space is aimed at the promotion of LD-3-standardair freight containers. With a maximum takeoff weight of only 123 tonnes thetwin-enginejet airliner on 4500 km maximum reach 24.7 t payload, or as a counterpoint is 2340 km reach 33.4 tons payload.

The required length of the runway after all, 2375 m is striking. A nearly equal length track is required for landing. The maximum travel speed to reach 80% of the speed of sound. That would be roughly around 900 km/h.

Construction of the prototype may in Germany

The decision for the construction of the prototype and the first 15 series aircraft in the EU is not easily fell the Russian aircraft industry with security. That Rosavia decided yet, said according to data of the Russian engineer Alexander Klimov, essential for sales and operation of aircraft Western certification by the European Aviation Safety Agency by at leastone-thirdis faster and less expensive than if the new aircraft first in Russia and then again in Western Europe would be admitted.

Sergey Grachev, Chief Marketing Officer of the frigate Ecojet program, even stressed that construction and approval of the aircraft in Russia were not possible at all. Of production in the EU, it promises also integrating a modern Western cockpit, making an expensive retraining of Western pilots on a Russian cockpit redundant.

Germany also is in the running for the choice of location

After part of the tests in the wind tunnel for the frigate Ecojet aircraft in Germany, the Federal Republic is one of the three countries with the best opportunities for the choice of location falling in February according to Russian data. The two other countries with similarly good chances are the Czech Republic and the Slovakia.

The completion of the prototype in the year 2018 and flight testing are provided by Rosavia 2019. Sure, the manufacture of 15 series engines in the EU is warants. It unofficially, however, mean that even the first 45 machines in the same plant in the EU could be made.

ThyssenKrupp is firmly embedded in the construction programme. Since 2013, ThyssenKrupp’s engineers advise the Russian partner in the production planning. Components and modules suppliers from more than ten countries will come together at the building.

Development of the frigate Ecojets has long history

The decision of the Russian aircraft industry to build a transport aircraft with elliptical cross section has a long history. The project was started in the former Tupolev Design Bureau as early as 1991. In the course of restructuring of the Russian aircraft industry was the project on the Rosavia consortium of 2004 and is headed by Alexander Klimov, the son of the former Valentin Klimov, Tupolev Chief Engineer here. In Western countries the idea of an oval cross section is also repeatedly surfaced, but has not so far been pursued.
