Airflow research on the Frigate Ecojet model carried out at TsAGI
10 June 2013
Specialists from the aerodynamics department of TsAGI (Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute in Moscow) carried out research on the physics of the airflow of the Frigate Ecojet model. According to the results of the tests, airflow is advantageous in a wide range of gliding and incidence angles. Furthermore, critical values of the angles, at which flow breakdown happens, were determined. Findings will be used to develop proposals for adjustments of local aerodynamics for further improvement of the takeoff and landing wing mechanics of the Frigate Ecojet.
Tests were carried out in a Т-102 subsonic wind tunnel. Researchers used the tuft method, which made it possible to produce a quality flow map of plane components with extended and fully swept wing.
This visualization method is based on attaching wool tufts to a uniformly colored surface. Tufts change their position in relation to the model, making it possible to determine which modes lead to flow breakdown with considerable aerodynamic penalty to plane’s performance.
